Overview
Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle and stronghold from around 1300 that guards Oslo harbour. The grounds are free to visit and offer wide views over the fjord, while the castle itself, Norway’s Resistance Museum and the Armed Forces Museum sit within the walls. The changing of the guard and the green ramparts make it a popular spot right in the city.
The nearest metro station is Stortinget, in the heart of the centre. From there it is about a 10-minute walk downhill toward the fjord to the main entrance. Jernbanetorget by Oslo Central Station is an equally good alternative.
In summer there are free guided tours and concerts on the grounds, and the ramparts are a favourite spot for a picnic overlooking the Oslo fjord. From here it is also a short walk on to the City Hall and Aker Brygge.
